As the Porn Film Festival Vienna approaches, running from April 10th to 14th, we revisited our Radio Pleasure Society archive from last year, where we spoke with Vienna-based artist, filmmaker, and festival organizer Jasmine Hagendorfer. The conversation explored the intersection of sex and technology, a topic that remains highly relevant today. We discussed Jasmine’s film Musings of a Mechatronic Mistress: The Peculiar Purpose of Tiffany the Sex Robot and delved into the broader implications of technology in sexuality, post-porn politics, and the ethical dimensions of sex robots.
Post-porn challenges mainstream porn’s often conservative and heteronormative frameworks. It aims to represent a broader spectrum of sexual identities and gender expressions, often incorporating artistic and subversive elements. The Porn Film Festival Vienna, which Jasmine co-founded, provides a platform for this genre, bridging the gap between feminist and queer theory, art, and pornography.
In Musings of a Mechatronic Mistress, Tiffany, a self-aware sex robot, embarks on a journey of self-discovery by interviewing a diverse group of experts. Jasmine’s innovative concept of letting a sex doll “speak” with real researchers adds a layer of wit and feminism to the film. The project, funded by the European Union, is part of a larger initiative exploring ethical guidelines for sex robots and their societal impact, particularly on women.
There always have been deep historical ties between sex and technology. From ancient artifacts resembling dildos to modern advancements like sex robots, technological innovations have long influenced human sexuality. With each technological leap, new opportunities and ethical challenges arise in the realm of intimacy.

One of the film’s key messages is that technology, including sex robots, reflects the intentions and biases of its creators. Experts in the film, such as Kate Devlin, highlighted how current designs often perpetuate patriarchal and heteronormative ideals of beauty and behavior. The ethical challenge lies in designing technologies that do not reinforce harmful stereotypes or limit the diversity of sexual expression.
Jasmine’s film faced resistance from the project’s researchers, but her persistence in blending humor with feminist critique paid off. By allowing Tiffany, a sex doll, to critically question her own existence and societal role, the film invites audiences to reflect on the absurdities and serious implications of sex tech. The unexpected twist that Tiffany chooses to return to a “sex doll brothel” at the film’s conclusion adds another layer of commentary on agency and choice. Overall, Musings of a Mechatronic Mistress shows the ever evolving dynamics between technology, sexuality, and ethics.
